The Grapevine: A Look at Upcoming Holidays Set to Take Place and Recalling the Iconic PJ Kelly's Pub

By Rosalyn Queen on February 17, 2022 from The Grapevine

As we get a little more daylight each day, it seems we may be moving closer to spring.  As we move closer to spring there are a few holidays that we can all observe.

St. Patrick’s Day is the next holiday that we can all observe.  With a little thought and planning it can be a fun holiday.  It is a cultural and religious celebration.  It is always held on March 17, which is the day of St Patrick’s death.  It will fall during Lent and whenever it happens to be on a Friday special compensation is given by the church to eat meat.

The traditional meal on St. Patrick’s Day is beef stew or corn beef sandwich.  The popular drink for the day is beer.  A traditional breakfast would be Irish bacon and cabbage.  Some words you might hear on this day is Fadge, which is Irish potato cakes.  Another word is Coddle, which is the Irish take on stew.

St. Patrick’s Day was always observed and kept alive in Downtown Clarksburg by Pat Kelly at his restaurant on Third Street.  From early morning until late into the night dancing, singing and music was heard from his establishment.  Most of us made sure we wore something green.  And we all wore a badge that said Kiss Me I Am Irish, or I am not Irish But you Can Still Kiss Me.  Some of us old timers really miss the tradition but hope the next generation will pick it up and go

I mentioned Lent and it will soon be starting.  I hope you are giving some thought to what you might be doing to prepare for Easter.  With the current pandemic situation there is much we can do to help each other get through this difficult time.  Remember to get your Easter Bread orders in to the PWA.  Call 304-624-6881.   We will be making a limited number of loaves, so be sure to get your treat for Easter.

TaKe care of yourself, stay healthy and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
