The Grapevine: Easter Bread and Looking at Age-Old Question of "Do You Make Your Bed Every Morning?"

By Rosalyn Queen on March 05, 2020 from The Grapevine

Do you make your bed every morning?  I have been seeing this question asked quite frequently lately on Facebook.  I asked myself the same question and my answer was yes.  Right away I knew why my answer was yes.

I know that as a young girl my mother would never let me leave the house until my bed was made.  This habit followed me into my adult  life and into my marriage.   I never really thought much about why but after seeing this question on Facebook, I began to think about why.

I cannot come up with a definitive answer but I come up with a few answers after much thought.  Number one I guess my mother thought that this was an example that all good housewives strived for in being a good housekeeper.  I think that she also thought that all husbands thought that this was an example of a good housekeeper.   I think she also thought that if you had visitors during the day, they really might have unkind thoughts about you if they saw the bed was unmade.

Other than these reasons I cannot think of why else it was so important to make “that” bed.  I can truly say that there has been very few times that I have left my house with my bed unmade.  To be truthful, I worry all day long when I have.  I once read that leaving the covers pulled down on the bed airs it out and this is more healthful.  I truly know that my bedroom looks so much better when the bed is made.

If we were doing a survey I feel that the results would show that many of the younger generation leaves the house without making the beds.  Probably most of the younger children leave the house without making their beds, so it might be safe to say that the generation of making beds is gone.

Lent is here and I started out Ash Wednesday by going to mass and getting ashes.  I have given much thought as to what I might do to make this a good Lenten season and I have decided that I will give up eating meat on Wednesday as well as Friday.  I hope to be a kinder more compassionate person and that I will be able to attend mass more frequently.

I am now taking therapy to see if it helps the neuropathy.  I take it three times a week and am hoping for some good results.  I will keep you posted once I have had several treatments.

As I mentioned last week i is time to get ready to make your Easter bread.  If you do not have time to make it try ordering some from The Immaculate Conception Church, the St. James  Church, the Greenbrier Restaurant, and Tomaro's Bakery.  You will need to place your order in advance.  If you would like to try to make your own the recipe is in my cookbook, “Arrivederci.”  It can be purchased at Tomaro's Bakery.

As much as we all hoped we would not we will get that Easter snow and maybe the groundhog was wrong.  Keep healthy, watch out for the virus and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
