The Grapevine: Enjoying the Little Gifts Life Offers Us and a Bit of Talk from My Recent 80th Birthday

By Rosalyn Queen on June 11, 2020 from The Grapevine

As we get older, it seems that it does not take much to make us happy.  Sometimes just a kind word, or a homemade card from our grandchild or sometimes just a phone call from an old friend. I remember how much happiness a dozen roses brought me or a diamond ring on Christmas, but as I have gotten older, these material things are not what it is all about.

This past week I went to the Post Office and there was a Card in my box to pick up an item too large for my box.  I did as was instructed and the post man handed me a rather large Manila envelope.  I went to my car and like an excited five year old on her birthday opened it right then and there.

Inside the envelope was a black binder that was held shut with a black ribbon and Attached to the ribbon was a gold charm featuring the “tree of life.”  I recognized it immediately as I had purchased it in the form of a bracelet for some Christmas gifts. Inside the binder was a card titled Celebration of Life.  The inscription read “A tree will be planted in a United States National forest in your honor.  May your blessings be as numerous as the leaves upon it branches.”  It was signed The Cecil B. Highland, Jr and Barbara B. Highland Cancer Center at United HospitaL Center.  It closed with this verse, long may your tree stand, reaching ever upward, to embrace the light and warmth of the sky above.

This was one of the most thoughtful gifts I have received.  It truly meant so much to me and having received It at a time when there is so much turmoil really lightened my day. I thank those responsible for this gift.

An information card was enclosed that advised to learn more visit their website at www.TheTreesRemembered.com.

This past week we observed the fifth birthday of my great granddaughter, Avery.  She is such a sweetheart and her mother and daddy have done such a good job on raising g her.  I hope I will get to celebrate many more birthdays with her.

For that infamous 80th birthday party of mine I received a book titled Gettin Old Aint For Wimps.  I have a great time reading from it and I wanted to share with you this funny little verse.

Lord,  I have to admit it is a kick to get older. I feel more freedom to do outrageous things, such as turn a cartwheel, swing dance or rock climb.  I have been much too appropriate in my life.  It is time to make a splash and enjoy this precious life you have given me.  Who is in for having a good time?

Be safe, be healthy and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
