The Grapevine: One of Clarksburg's Best Kept Secrets on the Restaurant Front and the Passing of a Friend

By Rosalyn Queen on September 14, 2023 from The Grapevine

I found one of the best kept secrets in Clarksburg when My Friend Alexa Scott and I were going out to lunch last week and the Grilled Club Cafe was recommended to us by my son, Marty.   The cafe is located in the Broadway community.  It is in the newly renovated Broadway Apartments and has a great appearance both inside and out.

Upon entering, you are greeted by an eight-foot tin man and the inside decor features a chess set on the ceiling. But so much for the decorations we were there to eat.

We sat down and started studying the menu.  It featured sandwiches, hamburgers, cold cut sandwiches, and grilled club sandwiches as well as salads and other items.  I chose a hamburger and Alexis ordered a turkey and bacon ranch.

Both of us were pleased with our choices and found them to be fresh and delicious.  I must add that prior to our visit I was having last-minute company and had Marty go out and pick up food and he stopped at the restaurant.  He brought home several hoagies, a club sandwich, sausage sandwich and several hamburgers.   These were complimented by fried hot green beans, fried mushrooms, mac and cheese bites, potato wedges and fried mozzarella sticks.

I did a little slicing of the sandwiches and a placement on a pretty dish of the sides, and I had lunch to serve.  Plus, it was delicious. I also want to tell you that the prices were great. Those of you that know me know that one of my pet peeves is paying $2 or more for a cup of coffee, well here it is for $1.79.  I encourage you to stop in or place a takeout order.

Well, the rest of the story is the owner, Jason Custer, joined Alexis and me and we had a great conversation.  An interesting fact: he is related to Custer of Custer’s last stand. While visiting the cafe be sure to look at all the renovations in Broadway.  It is being restored to Broadway where I grew up.

This past week I attended the funeral services for John Oliverio.  John has been a part of my entire life.  We were both born in East View and our roots go deep.  I was glad I could be there for his children Tia, Bianca, Alisha, and Jon Michael and his brother, Joe.  Through his ownership of the Superette, John meant a lot to a lot of people in East View, especially the young kids. May he rest in peace.

The Sons of Italy picnic was great and was well attended.  The food was delicious.  The club is once again growing under the leadership of Rocky Romano as president.  It looks like we are attracting some of the younger Italian Americans to join.  If interested contact Rocky.

Well, it is finally canning time. Be sure to visit local farmers markets for your peppers.

Enjoy the beautiful fall weather, stay safe, stay healthy and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
