The Grapevine: The Eclipse, Future Female Leaders, a Pair of Special Birthdays and a Little Bit More

By Rosalyn Queen on April 11, 2024 from The Grapevine

Last week the most popular word in the English language was “Eclipse.” I tried to understand the importance of this, but I never quite got it right.

Why did it happen? Was there a reason, and what was the end result?

I intend to do a little more research to find these answers.  Since I have had retina trouble, I chose not to go outside to watch Monday’s eclipse. In our area, I think that most people were disappointed but then it was a once or twice in a lifetime event that we will be able to tell our children about.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the “Moving Up Ceremony” for the Young Progress Women’s Association girls.  All seven were present along with their sponsors Betty Felts and Nicole Osborn at the April 7 event.  Rhonda Holyfield Mangieri, who sponsored the event, delivered a moving message to the young ladies that I am sure will linger with them for a long time.  I was so pleased to be a part of this event and to have the time to socialize with them and their families.  With these young ladies in leadership roles, we will be in good hands.

I am a party animal, especially for birthdays and this week I will be celebrating with Dorothy McClung and Virgil Smith.  Dorothy will be observing her 100th birthday and Virgil has reached the big 9-0.

Much can be said about Dorothy, but I remember her as a pioneer for women.  She came from an era where women were not encouraged to seek a higher education.  Dorothy did and enjoyed a productive teaching career.  I also remember her kindness toward my mother who grew up with her in North View.  Thanks, Dorothy, for being you.

Next Virgil Smith is married to my sister and has been consistent as a husband, father, and grandfather.  He blended into our Italian crew, and we have all depended on him at one time.  He is very family oriented and along with Joan, they will always be surrounded by their offspring.

May each new year come to them with good health and surrounded by those they love. Happy birthday.

I hope that you are seeking information about individuals who are seeking public office.  I certainly know that you are not as involved as the Queen family but I encourage you to take an active part to find out about the candidates so you can make a good choice.  Be good citizens and get involved.

Good weather is here and now is the time to start getting things ready for our gardens.  I do not know if I told you, but I have a beautiful pot of basil growing on my kitchen table and have already had a fresh tomato salad with fresh basil. The basil was an Easter gift from my daughter Leslie and her husband Dixon Pruitt.  It will last me through spring with the right care. Now is the time to get pansies as they are not available all summer.

Stay healthy, stay away from Covid and until next week, “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
