Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Opens Playgrounds

By Jeff Toquinto on June 10, 2020

For those wondering about the status of the park system in the City of Bridgeport, there’s good news for those who want to take advantage of the city’s playgrounds.

According to Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Director Joe Shuttleworth, the playgrounds are open.

“As of this morning, we have received approval from the Harrison County Health Department, our local authority, to open our playgrounds today,” said Shuttleworth. “We’re taking down the signs that are up.”

The city has been waiting for the green light from the Health Department before moving forward. Shuttleworth said they got the okay today.

“We’ll be trying to disinfect to our best extent,” said Shuttleworth. “We’re advising users to be cautious and utilize the facilities at their own discretion. We’re also advising people to follow CDC guidelines for hand washing and sanitizing their hands.”

Shuttleworth said that, outside of the city pool, this should open up most of the park facilities. He added that bathroom facilities and picnic shelters are open for use.

“Everything is open at all of our parks,” he said.

As for Bridgeport City Park, the playground there will be close for a portion of time Thursday. However, it is not related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The playground will be shut down due to construction work,” said Shuttleworth. “We will be replacing a bay of swings. This was already scheduled to be done.”
