The West Virginia State Auditor’s Office announced this week that the City of Bridgeport has officially joined the WV Checkbook, further strengthening its commitment to open government, fiscal responsibility, and accountable use of taxpayer dollars. Through the WV Checkbook platform, Bridgeport residents can view their city’s spending, revenue, and budget activity in a clear, easy to understand format that puts citizens in the driver’s seat of local oversight.
“The City of Bridgeport recognizes that transparency is the foundation of trust between residents and their local government,” said State Auditor Mark Hunt, “WV Checkbook gives taxpayers a formidable tool to see exactly how their hard-earned dollars are being used to support their community and to stay engaged in municipal decision making. It also equips elected officials with a clear way to show their work by demonstrating how their policy decisions impact essential services, local projects, and long-term benefits for the families and individuals they serve.”
“This move positions Bridgeport as a forward-looking, fiscally accountable community that is using modern tools to safeguard public funds and uphold public trust. By putting detailed financial information online, the city is inviting residents to follow the budgeting process, see priorities, and understand how projects are funded over time. This approach supports more informed public decisions, protects taxpayers, and reinforces the city’s commitment to responsible, transparent stewardship of every public dollar,” said Bridgeport Mayor Robert Matheny.
