Elkins Outlasts Bridgeport in Regional Softball Playoff Opener
By Michael Minnich on May 12, 2026
ELKINS -- The No. 5 Bridgeport Indians could not complete a late rally, falling to the No. 4 Elkins Tigers, 9-5, in the opener of the double-elimination Class AAA Region II tournament.
After the Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the second, the Tribe got even in the top of the third.
Peyton Kelley bunted for a one-out base hit, then Reese Van Zant singled and Mia Gibson drove in both runners with a triple to center field.
The Tigers, though, broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and two more in the bottom of the sixth.
Down 9-2 entering the top of the seventh, Van Zant doubled to lead off the frame, then Avery Humble's one-out single put runners on the corners.
WIth two away, Amayah Clark tripled to right to bring home both runners, then an error on Gracia Knight's fly ball brought in Clark: 9-5.
But a flyout to short ended the game.
Van Zant finished 2-for-4 with two runs, while Gibson and Clark each had two RBIs.
Humble went 2-for-4 with a run and Kelley added two hits and a run.
Addison Mike doubled and took the loss in the circle despite seven strikeouts in a complete game.
Bridgeport (6-16) will travel to the loser of Tuesday's game between Elkins and top seed Keyser for an elimination game on Wednesday.
