Bridgeport High School the Class AAA Region II golf championship this afternoon at the Bridgeport Country Club.
The Indians won the region by 13 strokes. The Tribe finished with a total of 228 to get past runner-up Hampshire County, who finished at 241. Keyser came in third with a 217.
“It couldn’t’ be prouder of these kids,” said Coach Chris Kerr. “They worked hard all season and before that in the offseason in the Callaway tournaments and others. It’s nice to see them rewarded for that work, but we still have some work to do.”
Bridgeport was led by a monster afternoon by freshman Alexander Randolph. Randolph was the low medalist during the competition with 68. Teammate and junior Audrey Kerr tied for the second-best score of the day with a 76. Hampshire’s Peyton Vanmeter also finished at 76.
“He was smooth from first tee to the 18th tee,” said Kerr. “He played so well and managed his game well. He had it going with every club in the bag and his chipping and putting was out of this world. What makes it even better is he’s humble too.”
Kerr also had praise for Audrey Kerr. The standout doubles as the coach’s daughter.
“Anytime your kid goes out and gets a low score like that you’re happy. Knowing it helps the team makes it special because you’re excited for her as her coach and her father,” said Kerr.
Two other BHS golfers made up the final score. Guy Avolio finished with a 84, while Patrick Aucremanne carded a 91.
The team will now look to capture a state championship for the Indians. They will compete at the state championship match to be held at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling on The Jones Course at Speidel Golf Club.
Club play begins on Tuesday, Oct. 14 and concludes on Wednesday, Oct. 15. There will be a practice round for the teams on Monday.
The rest of the field consisted of Lewis County (268), Keyser (271), Elkins (276), and Robert C. Byrd (295). Hampshire County qualifies as the runner-up, while LCHS’s Dylan Hall (86) and Keyser’s Ryan Pratt (81) also qualified individually.
