Although there are a few minor details left to be completed, that “new look” inside the Bridgeport High School gymnasium former Principal Matt DeMotto promised is in place. The new roughly $200,000 bleacher project has its new logo in place when the new bleachers are put back.
Prior to his last official day at BHS, DeMotto broke down the project. And now, according to new Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Tom Sears, it is all but finished.
“There are a few more minor things left to do," said Sears earlier this week. "It's essentially completed."
Even with that, the arrowhead logo is prominently displayed. The logo, new bleachers, and the annual refinished floors will greet students when they arrive in late August.
The bleacher project, however, was more than just a prominent one. DeMotto said it was a needed one. He pointed out that despite multiple repairs, they were in desperate need of replacement and said the school had been told they were among the worst in the state.
That led the BHS administration to approach the Harrison County School board to do the project. The project was funded through facility dollars that go to each school for athletic purposes that is a result of the voter-approved levy.
With the new bleachers, there will be one less row on the visitors’ side. That will allow BHS and its opponents to have individual seats on the floor with a walking path behind it. It will be similar to what is in place at Robert C. Byrd and Notre Dame High Schools.
There will still be seating for more than 1,000 in the gymnasium.
Huffman Corporation has been the contractor. DeMotto said Danny Dennison, the head of maintenance for the Harrison County School District, was a great asset on the project as well.
