Off the Shelf: Check out Public Library's Markerspace

By Savanna Draper on August 14, 2024 from Off the Shelf

Opened in 2022, the Makerspace at the Bridgeport Public Library is the location of most of our STEM programs and materials. We offer classes and programs on general technology, 3D printing, coding, sewing, and even virtual reality! We offer programs for all ages from young children to older adults. All Makerspace programs and classes can be found on our website, bplwv.org/events. All Makerspace programs require registration. Be sure you check the age group for each program before registering.

If the Makerspace wasn’t already cool enough, beginning on September 9, drop by the Makerspace any Monday from 1:00-3:00 PM for Makerspace Open Hours! Makerspace Open Hours give patrons the opportunity to use Makerspace technology outside of normal program times and allow for unstructured learning. An experienced staff member will be available during Makerspace Open Hours to set up the requested tools, give tips on safely using the tools, and answer questions. During this weekly program, you will have a chance to try out any of our tools including a button maker, 3D printer, virtual reality headset (Meta Quest 2,) sewing machine, 3D pens, and a Cricut Maker 3 cutting machine.

Some tools have safety risks associated with them, so please use discretion and be aware that you may be required to sign a waiver before using equipment like sewing machines, 3D pens, button makers, and virtual reality headsets. Some tools, like the sewing machine, may require that you bring your own materials from home. Although Makerspace Open Hours are open to all ages, some tools have strict age limits. All patrons must adhere to the Patron Code of Conduct and Unattended Child Policy. Use of tools during Makerspace Open Hours are available on a first come, first served basis.

We are so excited to learn with you in our Makerspace! All of this information and more can be found by visiting our website bplwv.org/makerspace. If you have questions about Makerspace Open Hours, contact Angela at 304-842-8248 x5 or aspatafore@bridgeportwv.gov.
