Off the Shelf: Get Your Family to Take Part at Library as November is National Family Literacy Month

By Savanna Draper on November 06, 2024 from Off the Shelf

November is National Family Literacy Month. According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children, reading aloud with family is the most important activity for preparing children to read on their own. Reading helps with vocabulary, writing skills, attention span, and memory. Even if your child is an infant, reading to them has great benefits. The U.S. Department of Health states that infants learn to speak long before they say their first words. An essential part of this development is hearing words spoken aloud.

There are several easy ways your family can participate in National Family Literacy Month. Set aside a little time for reading every day, even if it's only for 15 minutes or so, any amount of time spent reading together is better than none at all! Read your child the book version of their favorite movie. If they can read independently, encourage them to read it themselves and discover what elements were left out of the movie.

Start a book club with friends and family. This can be formal or informal, and you can even listen to an audiobook together. Lastly, please consider taking a few trips to the library! Even if you don’t currently have a library card, your whole family is welcome to get signed up for one and start taking advantage of all that the Bridgeport Public Library has to offer.

We hope your family forms some great reading habits during National Family Literacy Month and keeps them up throughout the year!

Remember that the Bridgeport Public Library is here to help every step of the way. Not only do we have a wide selection of books for every age, but we also offer two weekly storytimes, Brilliant Beginnings and Little Learners, that will get your reading journey off to a great start. If your family prefers a more digital route, we offer a great eResource, TumbleBooksLibrary, which includes animated, talking picture books that teach kids the joy of reading in a format they’ll love. This resource can be accessed at bplwv.org/kids.
Happy reading!
