October 20-26, 2024 is National Friends of the Library Week. The Bridgeport Public Library is fortunate to have a great group of Friends to promote the library’s mission and volunteer to make our library a wonderful place to be. We would like to take this opportunity to give a huge THANK YOU to our Friends!
The Friends of the Bridgeport Public Library are a group of library lovers dedicated to helping the Bridgeport Public Library achieve its goals. They volunteer their time, skills, and resources to help the library during special programs and events. They publicly support and advocate for the library’s mission and goals. They wish to see the library succeed and function as an active part of that success. Being a Friend also comes with special perks, a sense of volunteerism, and knowing you have helped the library achieve its goals.
The Friends mission is to raise public awareness in the community about the library, to support the services and programs facilitated by the library and contribute to the overall strategic goals of the library. The Friends actively support the Bridgeport Public Library in its mission to meet the personal, educational, cultural, and professional information needs of the library community. The Friends of the Bridgeport Public Library typically meet in the Library Event Space on the 1st Thursday of the month from 4:00-5:00 PM.
What types of special projects do Friends get involved with? Anything that fits into the library’s mission! Some examples of projects we have done in the past include assisting in library events like the annual Summer Reading Program, Trunk-or-Treat, Egg Hunt, and BHS Jazz Concert, preserving library history by scanning and digitizing photos and documents, participating in the Artist Spotlight, hosting Murder Mystery Nights, and attending community outreach events on behalf of the library. Our Friends also help us with general library collection maintenance like shelving books and shelf reading.
What perks do Friends get? We offer Book Sale vouchers, annual Friends appreciation dinners, involvement in community outreach programs, the ability to meet other volunteer-minded individuals, and helping to build a more literate, informed, and connected community.
Does this sound like something you would like to be involved in? We are always accepting new members! There is no cost to become a Friend. All we require is that you are at least 18 years old and have an active library card in good standing. If you have questions, would like more information, or if you are interested in becoming a Friend of the Bridgeport Public Library, contact our Adult Services Coordinator, Angela at 304-842-8248 x5 or aspatafore@bridgeportwv.gov.
