Off the Shelf: With Mental Health Awareness Month at Hand, the Library has Resources to Learn About It

By Savanna Draper on May 22, 2024 from Off the Shelf

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. According to the American Library Association (ALA,) Mental Health Awareness Month was established in 1949 to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans’ lives and to celebrate recovery from mental illness.

The Bridgeport Public Library has many resources and books available to help patrons explore and learn more about mental health. One eResource we offer that specializes in overall health is Consumer Health Complete. Consumer Health Complete supports the information needs of patients and fosters an overall understanding of health-related topics. It provides content covering all key areas of health and wellness. One of the “trending topics” on this platform currently is mental health, and when explored, provides over 600 peer-reviewed articles covering a plethora of mental health topics.

Another relevant eResource pertaining to mental health is Udemy. Udemy is a great catch-all resource that offers over 19,000 video-based courses in business, technology, personal development, and wellness. When searching “mental health” on Udemy, over 250 videos ranging from “Mental Health First Aid Skills,” “Workplace Mental Health,” and “The Psychology of Happiness” are available. Udemy also offers “bite-sized” learning videos that range from 3-5 minutes. Some of these videos include “Mental Illness,” “Depression,” “Chronic Stress,” “Anxiety,” and more. Both Consumer Health Complete and Udemy are free to use with your Bridgeport Public Library card.

The library also offers tons of books on a wide variety of mental health topics. Continue reading to discover some recommended reading surrounding mental health.

Languishing: How to Feel Alive Again in a World That Wears Us Down by Corey Keyes will have you “ready to rethink your understanding of mental health, update your views on happiness, and come closer to realizing your potential.”

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb is a “boldly revealing portrait of what it means to be human, and a disarmingly funny and illuminating account of our own mysterious lives and our power to transform them.”

Over the Influence: Why Social Media is Toxic for Women and Girls—And How We Can Take It Back by Kara Alaimo reveals how social media is affecting every aspect of the lives of women and girls—from our relationships and our parenting to our physical and mental well-being.

It’s Not You: Identifying and Healing from Narcissistic People by Ramani Durvasula, PhD invites you to stop blaming yourself and trying to change the narcissistic person, and to start giving yourself permission to let go of their hold on you and finally embrace your true self.
Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle by Emily Nagoski explains why women experience burnout differently than men—and provides a simple, science-based plan to help women minimize stress, manage emotions, and live a more joyful life.
