Harrison County Bridge to be Closed for Roughly One Year as Part of Up to $3 Million Replacement Project

By Jeff Toquinto on May 17, 2024

Another bridge in North Central West Virginia is scheduled for replacement. And unlike some, this bridge will be totally shut down.

While the closure is not great news, the not-so-bad part of it is that it is not part of Interstate 79 or U.S. Route 50. The bridge is in a primarily residential area of Clarksburg and has been targeted for replacement for several years.

Recently, the West Virginia Department of Transportation began advertising to replace the bridge on Haymond Highway over Elk Creek in Clarksburg. The small bridge is primarily leads to Monticello Avenue as well as Harrison Street. Jessie Street and Martin Street also are areas that see local residential traffic utilize the bridge.

As noted, the bridge is not being repaired, but replaced. According to West Virginia Division of Highways District Four Construction Engineer Jason Nelson, the design is complete on the bridge. Bridgeport-based Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. (CEC) did the design work.
The bid has not yet been awarded, but that process should be complete soon. It will be a seven-figure plus project.

“(The) rough anticipated estimate is two to three million in cost,” said Nelson. “ … I anticipate this project starting in July to August this year.”

The completion date will come roughly a year later. Currently, Nelson said, the planned completion is set for August 30, 2025. During that time, the crossing point will be closed.

“According to the plans the bridge, and this crossing, will be closed for the duration of the project.  The official detour is basically using East Main Street to Monticello Avenue,” Nelson said.

What can the community expect when completed? The bridge will be greatly improved, but the look will be familiar.

“The replacement bridge will basically be of the same configuration and dimensions as the old one.  This is more a condition, age issue than a capacity upgrade,” said Nelson.

Editor's Note: Top photo show the condition of the bridge, while the second photo is a Google maps location of the bridge. Photo below is of the plaque on the bridge showing (assuming Harrison) County Court members John J. Sturm, President; Isaac L. Davisson; and D.W. Cork. Also listed is County Road Engineer C.M. Harbert.
