Let's Get Fresh: Bridgeport Farmer's Market Pricing Survey Part Two
By Bob Workman on June 22, 2014 from Let’s Get Fresh
Since becoming involved in the whole Farmers Market scene five years ago I have often heard folks comment, either directly to me or via third parties, that the Market is "terribly expensive". A while back one good friend of mine tried to tell me, "Produce is three to four times higher at a farmers market." Many times I have even heard this from people who admit to having never been to the BFM or any farmers market for that matter. They just took somebody else’s word for it. This line of thinking has always troubled me. Many people seem to think that small farmers must be filthy rich. As a small business owner myself it always puzzles me when people question my prices, as if they know more about my costs of doing business than I do. And I can assure you that I certainly have no idea what all costs go into a small farmer’s pricing decisions. For that matter, neither do most of you.
markets and small farmers in general.

Mr. Eicher
Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment. While Aldi was not one of the supermarkets used in the piece I wish I could refer you to the original blog which has gone missing from C-B in which the federal farm subsidy program is discussed. Farm subsidies favor large-scale, non-organic, industrial farms (some of this did change for the better in the new farm bill). In addition to this the economies of scale and the more expensive practice of organic farming do make it more expensive for a small farmer to bring his product to market. To address your 3 points. #1. Is a small farmer not allowed a mark-up? Isn't that profit? #2. Small farmers do have transportation costs that, by their scale, are somewhat similar to supermarkets. #3. Very few large farms are unionized and the larger of the two stores in the survey is non-union, and quite proud of it. Not sure about Aldi. It is your choice, of course. For me I prefer to support local WV folks, even if it might be a bit more expensive. I also prefer to eat produce that is free from pesticides and other unnecessary chemicals and, in most cases, was just picked the morning that I bought it. If you do get by the Market some Sunday stop by the info tent and we could discuss this with one of the farmers. You can't do that at Aldi. Thanks Bob Workman

Next time check Aldi in New Point. Their prices and produce quality make BFM look overpriced. I get the feeling prices at the BFM should be more reasonable than any chain. They have no large chain markup, no transportation cost, no union cost. I could go on!
